NHMA Elects Dr. Gilbert Burgos as President for a Three-Year Term
WASHINGTON, DC — May 13, 2026
The National Hispanic Medical Association (NHMA) is pleased to announce that Dr. Gilbert Burgos, MD, MPH, has been elected to serve as NHMA President for a three-year term. This leadership transition reflects NHMA's continued commitment to strong governance, organizational stability and advancing its mission during a pivotal time for the health of Hispanic and Latino communities nationwide.
Dr. Burgos brings more than two decades of dedicated membership and service to NHMA. A longstanding leader within the organization, he previously served as Chairman of the Board and Acting President during a structural leadership shift. His steady guidance, institutional knowledge and commitment to NHMA's members have helped the organization prepare for its next chapter of growth and impact.
As President, Dr. Burgos will lead NHMA's strategic efforts to empower Hispanic and Latino physicians, develop the next generation of health care leaders and advocates and improve health outcomes in underserved communities. With extensive experience as a senior executive working with hospitals, large multispecialty physician groups and health plans, he has built a career focused on transforming health care delivery systems, strengthening access to quality care and advancing innovative solutions that meet the needs of diverse populations from coast to coast.

At a time when health equity, physician advocacy and culturally informed care remain urgent national priorities, NHMA's leadership is more important than ever. Under Dr. Burgos' presidency, the organization will continue to expand professional development opportunities, strengthen partnerships with advocacy organizations and educational institutions, elevate the voice of Hispanic physicians in public policy discussions and champion solutions that address persistent disparities affecting all communities across the country.
Dr. Burgos is board-certified in Internal Medicine and is a Certified Physician Executive through the American Association of Physician Leaders. He earned his Doctor of Medicine from Albert Einstein College of Medicine, completed his Internal Medicine residency at Montefiore Medical Center and received a Master of Public Health with a concentration in Health Policy and Management from Harvard University.
