NHMA provides technical assistance to Redes en Acción and is represented by Dr. Elena Rios. She is Co-Chair of the Health Promotion and Public/Professional Education Committee and also a member of the Redes En Acción National Steering Committee. Redes En Acción: The National Hispanic/Latino Cancer Network is a National Cancer Institute-funded initiative to combat cancer among Latinos. A multi-faceted approach to cancer prevention and control, Redes En Acción is building a nationwide network of community-based organizations, research institutions, government health agencies and the public. Core activities include promoting training and research opportunities for Latino students and researchers, generating research projects on key Latino cancer issues, and supporting cancer awareness activities within the Latino community. A goal of Redes is to develop pilot projects into full, competing grant applications for NIH or other external funding. Providing training opportunities for the Latino community is a top priority for Redes En Acción. Cancer research opportunities are made available for Latino junior faculty, pre/post-doctoral individuals, and undergraduate trainees.

NHMA contributes to the Redes Report, a 6-page Redes program publication produced and distributed quarterly that disseminates relevant and helpful information about cancer issues and "role models" engaged in research and professional and public education related to those Latino cancer issues. The newsletter also keeps Redes partners - and potential partners - informed of program activities. NHMA contributes to this report with a brief article on the latest activities of the NHMA that also includes a "role model" story featuring an NHMA members (e.g. an Hispanic physician that is engaged in cancer research, cancer research training/mentorship, or cancer awareness activity) and a listing of NHMA activities and resources (e.g. conferences, meetings, special events relating to Hispanics and cancer research/training/awareness opportunities). NHMA includes relevant Redes En Acción information in the NHMA (bi-monthly) newsletter and other communication channels and venues supported by the NHMA. NHMA also provides information to its membership and other professional databases about Redes En Acción training, mentorship and cancer research opportunities.

NHMA also participates in two annual meetings - one for NCI projects and the other for Redes National Steering Committee meeting in San Antonio, TX. This program was recently awarded its second 5 year grant from NCI.
