Consensus Summit on Building Diversity in Medicine and Research Report

As a part of an ongoing commitment to promote health care equity and quality, the National Hispanic Medical Association (NHMA) convened a meeting of national experts to the Consensus Summit on Building Diversity in Medicine and Research, on January 29, 2015 at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda, Maryland.  National leaders for underrepresented populations in science and medicine discussed their best ideas and practices for improving representation; established recommendations, and formulated a direction and consensus statements, with the aim to build diversity in medicine and research in the U.S. not sure about the wording:  Link here to the Summit Final Report.

Can I join as a medical student?

Yes, you can, but only in your last year in medical school. We encourage all other medical students to join the LMSA organization at lmsa.net. To join, click the icon to your right that says "Join or Renew Membership" that will bring you to our online membership store. Select the membership type "Health Professional Students," and complete the application and payment.

Is membership only open to Hispanic physicians?

Membership at NHMA is not restricted to Hispanic physicians. It is open to Residents, Medical Students and Healthcare Professionals. Non-physicians can apply under the Associate Membership type. To join, click the icon to your right that says "Join or Renew Membership" that will bring you to our online membership store. Select the membership type that suites you best and complete the application and payment.

Welcome to the National Hispanic Medical Association (NHMA)! We are pleased that you have chosen to join our organization. We are also eager to get to know you, to support you in your professional endeavors to work towards our mission of improving the health of Hispanics and to advance the leadership of Hispanic physicians and other healthcare professionals. As a member, you will have access to the NHMA's most current and comprehensive materials. NHMA is your association. So I, personally, encourage you to take full advantage of your benefits as a member.

As a member, you are entitled to: register at a discounted fee for the NHMA Annual Conference and earn CME credits; be nominated to Federal and private sector boards and commissions; and participate in the NHMA’s Board of Directors committees and other committees and programs.  You will also have the opportunity to join NHMA at its Congressional Briefings and Regional Leadership Forums with a unique network of healthcare professionals, corporate leaders and policy- makers. Membership at NHMA
