Consensus Summit on Building Diversity in Medicine and Research Report

As a part of an ongoing commitment to promote health care equity and quality, the National Hispanic Medical Association (NHMA) convened a meeting of national experts to the Consensus Summit on Building Diversity in Medicine and Research, on January 29, 2015 at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda, Maryland.  National leaders for underrepresented populations in science and medicine discussed their best ideas and practices for improving representation; established recommendations, and formulated a direction and consensus statements, with the aim to build diversity in medicine and research in the U.S. not sure about the wording:  Link here to the Summit Final Report.

NHMA's "CALL TO ACTION" against GOP Health Care Bill to Repeal  : This week, the Graham-Cassidy-Heller-Johnson Bill was introduced in the Senate as a last effort to Repeal the ACA this year. NHMA is not in favor of this bill.  NHMA advocates for health reform that includes access to affordable healthcare insurance for all and Medicaid expansion and subsidies and cost sharing for insurance plans. We must move forward to improve health reform policy that includes Essential Beneifits, health care professional diversity, leadership development and the support for the Offices of Minority Health at the US HHS agencies. LEGISLATION UPDATE

NHMA Supports Comprehensive Immigration Reform that includes Healthcare Benefits

Immigration Reform is expected to be announced after the Easter Break in the House and the Senate and is anticipated to be bipartisan. Immigration advocates hope to see a path to citizenship. NHMA and health professional leaders sent President Obama, and the Senate and House leaders about the importance of including health care for any sector included in the legislation. We are working with the Hispanic Congressmen champions for immigrants.

Affordable Care Act

Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius today announced new funding to help more uninsured Americans enroll in new health insurance coverage options made available by the Affordable Care Act. Approximately $150 million will help community health centers provide in-person enrollment assistance to uninsured individuals across the nation. About 1,200 health centers operate nearly 9,000 service delivery sites nationwide and serve approximately 21 million patients each year.

Medicare Provider Charge Data

As part of the Obama administration’s work to make our health care system more affordable and accountable, data are being released that show significant variation across the country and within communities in what hospitals charge for common inpatient services.  The data provided here include hospital-specific charges for the more than 3,000 U.S. hospitals that receive Medicare Inpatient Prospective Payment System (IPPS) payments for the top 100 most frequently billed discharges, paid under Medicare based on a rate per discharge using the Medicare Severity Diagnosis Related Group (MS-DRG) for Fiscal Year (FY) 2011. These DRGs represent almost 7 million discharges or 60 percent of total Medicare IPPS discharges.  Hospitals determine what they will charge for items and services provided to patients and these charges are the amount the hospital bills for an item or service. The Total Payment amount includes the MS-DRG amount, bill total per diem, beneficiary primary payer claim payment amount, beneficiary Part A coinsurance amount, beneficiary deductible amount, beneficiary blood deducible amount and DRG outlier amount.  For these DRGs, average charges and average Medicare payments are calculated at the individual hospital level. Users will be able to make comparisons between the amount charged by individual hospitals within local markets, and nationwide, for services that might be furnished in connection with a particular inpatient stay.

Marketplace Enrollment

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) today announced that the application for health coverage has been simplified and significantly shortened. The application for individuals without health insurance has been reduced from twenty-one to three pages, and the application for families is reduced by two-thirds. The consumer friendly forms are much shorter than industry standards for health insurance applications today.

In addition, for the first time consumers will be able to fill out one simple application and see their entire range of health insurance options, including plans in the Health Insurance Marketplace, Medicaid, the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) and tax credits that will help pay for premiums.

10 Fellows - Mid career physicians from across the nation discussed policies and programs developed since the 1960s with history of health disparities; discussed what the Division of Medicine does at HRSA to increase diversity and primary care training; how laws are developed and the importance of Medicare and Medicaid; the role of the Institute of Medicine and leadership styles and skills-building

NHMA Resident Mentoring Program for 30 participants from the NHMA Council of Residents at the conference with mentoring discussions with physicians from four career pathways: Academic Clinical; Academic Research; Clinical Practice; and Administration

NHMA Medical School Recruitment Program at the NHMA Conference with lectures from Board Members and LMSA medical student panel. Partners include the George Washington University School of Medicine & Health Sciences and the AAMC. About 100 students attended and NHMA will provide a mentor to the college students who are applying to medical school and track the progress of their application.

DIVISION CHIEF – GENERAL INTERNAL MEDICINE

The Division Chief of General Internal Medicine will be responsible for the administrative, clinical, research and educational aspects of the division. In this highly visible role, you will recognize the unique position of the division with its focus on medical education and its relationship to the community as primary care providers all while supporting the research endeavors of its faculty. You will also have an understanding of the changing landscape of health care and how it affects delivery and primary care at academic medical institutions like Mount Sinai.

Responsibilities will include:

    • Developing strategic plans and goals for the division in alignment with those of the Department of Medicine
    • Overseeing all financial, operational and personnel issues
    • Recruiting new clinical and research faculty
    • Advancing the national reputation of the division through scholarship, education, innovation and collaboration with other divisions>
    • Overseeing clinical practice development
    • Developing an integrative patient-centered practice
    • Maintain and continue to develop the service to the underserved community surrounding the practice;
    • Maintaining and furthering the goal of providing outstanding care for all patients
    • Developing a training program across the continuum of education
    • Maintaining a commitment to the primary care residency training program
    • Fostering and mentoring the career development of junior faculty members
    • Establishing collaborations with other divisions and departments within the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai
    • Handling other related duties as necessary

Qualified candidates should be Board Certified in Internal Medicine with preference given to those with advanced degrees. Experience in management of faculty and clinical practice development and an established academic track record are highly desired as well. Faculty appointment at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai is available at the Associate Professor or Professor Rank and commensurate with experience and achievement.
