National Hispanic Health Foundation Child Obesity Health Communications Program.

Working with NHMA and the State Hispanic Medical Societies and physician leaders in California and New York, this effort will focus on developing knowledge to health communications to empower Hispanic physicians to educate their communities over two years. Funding for two years is being provided by the Kellogg Foundation.

We plan to coordinate the following major activities and welcome your input and participation:

  1. Research Federal Programs that can decrease Obesity in Children from 0 to 8 years old. We have already partnered with the First Lady's Let's Move! Campaign and the Surgeon General, had  a Congressional Briefing on Child Obesity in October 2010,  and have developed the www.HispanicHealth.info Portal with the support of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus. Now we are focused on educating our community leaders, health care leaders and policy leaders as well as the community on future strategic policy efforts that can decrease obesity in children ---- to start building a healthy generation for the nation.
  2. Planning and Implementing a Federal Panel of Experts Meeting in Fall, 2011 in Washington, DC.
  3. Co -Convening with Congresswoman Lucille Roybal Allard, Chairwoman, Health Task Force, Congressional Hispanic Caucus on a Congressional Health Briefing on Prevention  in October, 2011---to showcase programs in regions that impact Hispanic health.
  4. Developing a Policy Paper on Child Obesity with our Policy Committee of the Board of Directors to be presented at the NHMA Annual Conference in April 2012 in Washington, DC.
