Consensus Summit on Building Diversity in Medicine and Research Report

As a part of an ongoing commitment to promote health care equity and quality, the National Hispanic Medical Association (NHMA) convened a meeting of national experts to the Consensus Summit on Building Diversity in Medicine and Research, on January 29, 2015 at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda, Maryland.  National leaders for underrepresented populations in science and medicine discussed their best ideas and practices for improving representation; established recommendations, and formulated a direction and consensus statements, with the aim to build diversity in medicine and research in the U.S. not sure about the wording:  Link here to the Summit Final Report.

Repeal and Replace ACA Agenda is back...President Trump is interested now in negotiating with the Freedom Caucus of the Congress and the Democrats about health insurance reform prior to starting the debate on Tax Reform. The ACA Repeal could include $1Trillion in taxes (individual and employer taxes, subsidies) that would be saved to the detriment of Latino and other working people's health without replacement.

Transforming Clinical Practice Initiative
The Transforming Clinical Practice Initiative is designed to help clinicians achieve large-scale health transformation. The initiative is designed to support more than 140,000 clinician practices over the next four years in sharing, adapting and further developing their comprehensive quality improvement strategies. The initiative is one part of a strategy advanced by the Affordable Care Act to strengthen the quality of patient care and spend health care dollars more wisely. It aligns with the criteria for innovative models set forth in the Affordable Care Act:
  • Promoting broad payment and practice reform in primary care and specialty care,
  • Promoting care coordination between providers of services and suppliers,
  • Establishing community-based health teams to support chronic care management, and
  • Promoting improved quality and reduced cost by developing a collaborative of institutions that support practice transformation.

National Minority Health Month 2017 highlights community-level efforts 
to help end health disparities

 

On April 1, 2017, the U. S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Office of Minority Health (OMH) will launch the annual observance of National Minority Health Month. The theme this year, Bridging Health Equity Across Communities, emphasizes the collaborative, community-level work being done across the nation to help achieve health equity.

 

During National Minority Health Month 2017, the HHS OMH will highlight partner initiatives in communities that address the indirect conditions that affect health, also known as social determinants of health. The conditions in the places where people are born, grow, live, work, play, learn, and age have significant impact on the health outcomes of individuals, families, and their communities.

 

Organizations can also support efforts to help reduce health disparities by participating in the HHS OMH Health Equity Thunderclap on April 28.

 

Health disparities among racial and ethnic minority populations—or the differences in health, health care and well-being—have a detrimental effect on our nation and our communities. In the United States, it has been estimated that the combined cost of health disparities and subsequent deaths among racial and ethnic minorities due to inadequate and/or inequitable care is $1.24 trillion. Healthier communities mean lower health care costs, which translate into a stronger economy and a more productive, competitive America. 

 

HHS OMH granteesfederal agenciesand other partners are driving the community-level efforts to close the gap on disparities in health and health care. Innovative programs and initiatives, combined with an understanding of the social determinants of health that impact the health of local communities, are moving our country toward being a nation free from disparities in health and health care.

 

The HHS OMH is the lead agency for improving the health of racial and ethnic minority populations through the development of health policies and programs to help eliminate health disparities. Achieving a nation free of disparities in health and health care requires a focus on equity in all policies as a means of addressing the social determinants of health. Through the National Partnership for Action to End Health Disparitiesthe HHS OMH helps implement cross-sectoral efforts that are crucial for the health of our increasingly diverse nation.

 

Collaboration between organizations that make high quality education, safe neighborhoods, quality housing, reliable transportation, clean surroundings, nutritious food, and stable employment available to all Americans is key to helping end health disparities.

Resources on ADHD for Spanish Speakers

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) affects between 5-11% of the population, and 60% of children diagnosed with ADHD develop comorbid conditions (anxiety, depression, bipolar, etc.) by adulthood.  Did you know that the extensive resources on ADHD developed by CHADD’s National Resource Center on ADHD (funded by CDC) include resources available in Spanish?  See Recursos en Español(http://www.chadd.org/Understanding-ADHD/Recursos-en-español.aspx).

In addition, that page currently includes four factsheets in Spanish that are helpful for parents of children with ADHD, teachers, and adults with ADHD. These include:

The Summer Institute is designed to prepare the participants to work at the interface of cardiovascular genetics, epidemiology, bioinformatics, cardiovascular disease, and other heart, lung, blood and sleep disorders.

LEGISLATIVE UPDATE

 Senate Better Care Reconciliation Act, introduced from the Republican Senators to repeal the budget sections of the Affordable Care Act lost 4 Senate Votes this week from those who did not want loss of access to insurance or thought the changes did not do enough to repeal the ACA. Senate Leader McConnell decided to stop this bill and calls for a vote to Repeal ACA by voting to bring the passed House Bill to the Senate during the week of July 24th. 

 

Summary of the Senate GOP Bill ACA:

 

Health Care Access will be decreased: Drastically cuts Medicaid, the largest insurance program in the nation, by $770billion or about 23 million or more Americans, from the poor, elderly, disabled and pregnant women.  Governors to choose between block grants and per-capita allotments beginning in 2020, with a flexibility in the calculation of the base year.  Also, allows states to impose a work requirement on non-pregnant, non-disabled, non-elderly individuals receiving Medicaid.

Eliminates the individual and employer mandate penalties, but keeps federal subsidies only to poor. (ACA provides stipends for middle class) – would result in much more individual uninsured.

Eliminates the Essential Benefits for health insurance through the exchanges at the State level.

More options to buy lower-premium plans (high deductible plans)– would increase the underinsured or “Junk Insurance” not based on the Essential Benefits – loss of mental health, women’s health, vision or oral health care.

 

Affordability of Health Insurance is the goal, but with less coverage:

 Long-Term State Innovation Fund  -- waivers for states for Medicaid and high-risk pools to encourage states to assist high-cost and low-income individuals to purchase insurance.

 Tax Credits for individuals:  advanceable and refundable credits, adjusted for age, geography.

Office of Minority Health announces its call for proposals for programs targeted to minority populations addressing these issues in June.

The Prescription Drug User Fee Act (PDUFA) was created by Congress in 1992 and authorizes FDA to collect fees from companies that produce certain human drug and biological products. Since the passage of PDUFA, user fees have played an important role in expediting the drug approval process. The current legislative authority for PDUFA expires in September 2017. Without new legislation, FDA will no longer be able to collect user fees for future fiscal years to fund the human drug review process.

PDUFA passed the House by voice vote on July 13, 2017, and now goes to the Senate.

5Ways for Healthcare Providers to Get Ready for New Medicare Cards

Medicare is taking steps to remove Social Security numbers from Medicare cards. Through this initiative, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) will prevent fraud, fight identity theft and protect essential program funding and the private healthcare and financial information of our Medicare beneficiaries. CMS will issue new Medicare cards with a new unique, randomly-assigned number called a Medicare Beneficiary Identifier (MBI) to replace the existing Social Security-based Health Insurance Claim Number (HICN) both on the cards and in various CMS systems we use now. We’ll start mailing new cards to people with Medicare benefits in April 2018. All Medicare cards will be replaced by April 2019. CMS is committed to helping providers by giving them the tools they need. We want to make this process as easy as possible for you, your patients, and your staff. Based on feedback from healthcare providers, practice managers, and other stakeholders, CMS is developing capabilities where doctors and other healthcare providers will be able to look up the new MBI through a secure tool at the point of service. To make this change easier for you and your business operations, there is a 21-month transition period where all healthcare providers will be able to use either the MBI or the HICN for billing purposes. Therefore, even though your systems will need to be able to accept the new MBI format by April 2018, you can continue to bill and file healthcare claims using a patient’s HICN during the transition period. We encourage you to work with your billing vendor to make sure that your system will be updated to reflect these changes as well. Beginning in April 2018, Medicare patients will come to your office with new cards in hand. We’re committed to giving you the information you need to help your office get ready for new Medicare cards and MBIs. 

Here are 5 steps you can take today to help your office or healthcare facility get ready:

1. Go to our provider website and sign-up for the weekly MLN Connects® newsletter.  

2. Attend our quarterly calls to get more information. We’ll let you know when calls are scheduled in the MLN Connects newsletter.

3. Verify all of your Medicare patients’ addresses. If the addresses you have on file are different than the Medicare address you get on electronic eligibility transactions, ask your patients to contact Social Security and update their Medicare records.

4. Work with us to help your Medicare patients adjust to their new Medicare card. When available later this fall, you can display helpful information about the new Medicare cards. Hang posters about the change in your offices to help us spread the word.

5. Test your system changes and work with your billing office staff to be sure your office is ready to use the new MBI format.

Zika Care Connect


Zika Care Connect is a program designed to connect women, parents and caregivers of infants, and families affected by Zika to recommended
health care services. Zika Care Connect has expanded its network of specialty healthcare providers to an additional 10 jurisdictions throughout the United States. These jurisdictions include Arizona, Illinois, Louisiana, Massachusetts, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and Washington. The Healthcare Professional Network is accessible via the Zika Care Connect website and HelpLine.


Zika Care Connect is continuing to seek healthcare specialists in maternal-fetal medicine, mental health, radiology, pediatric ophthalmology, pediatric neurology, developmental pediatrics, infectious disease, and endocrinology to join the network.

Legislative Update
Zika Virus Public Health Emergency Declared in Puerto Rico

NHMA urges you contact your Congressman and Senator to pass legislation to fund Zika virus mosquito control, disease prevention as well as health care services and vaccine research - all needed to counter the urgent public health emergency in Puerto Rico and in affected areas such as Florida and other states. Congress went home for August before passing any support. We applaud CDC and HHS who have supported efforts against Zika with manpower and limited funds. 

CHIP Reauthorization Next Year

The Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) was signed into law in 1997 and provides federal matching funds to states to provide health coverage to children in families with incomes too high to qualify for Medicaid, but who can't afford private coverage. All states have expanded children's coverage significantly through their CHIP programs, with nearly every state providing coverage for children up to at least 200 percent of the Federal Poverty Level (FPL). CHIP provides health coverage to eligible children, through both Medicaid and separate CHIP programs.  CHIP is administered by states, according to federal requirements.  The program is funded jointly by states and the federal government.

According to 2015 statistics, CHIP has enrolled 8.9 million children and with the support of the Affordable Care Act, the CHIP program was able to coordinate a major Child Obesity Demonstration Project and simplify the eligibility standards for low income children to enroll in the program.  

NHMA Supports Accessing Higher Education Act

NHMA strongly supports the Accessing Higher Education Opportunities Act that would increase mentoring and counseling services to students attending HSIs and eligible for terminal doctoral degrees in healthcare careers – transferring to 4 year universities and applying to medical school, public health school, dental school, for example. NHMA is also ready to support the inclusion of this effort into the Higher Education Act Reauthorization in 2017.  

NHLA educates leaders at the Conventions on Hispanic policy agenda

NHMA president Elena Rios participated with the National Hispanic Leadership Agenda’s press events at both the Republican and Democratic Conventions and educated attendees on health priorities to improve the health of Hispanics. Included in the questions from reporters included the need for more Hispanics in the workforce, the differences in the platforms of the parties, and the strategies to reduce obesity and diabetes among our families. Noted a major difference for the parties on health include the Republican call for dismantling ACA, vouchers for Medicaid, and increasing the eligible age for Medicare…all in the spirit of decreasing govt. in healthcare.

NHHF Hispanic Health Reseearch Mentoring Program

NHHF is proud to announce the “Hispanic Health Research Mentoring Program” for 2016-2017, the first class of two to be trained in patient-centered research on Hispanic populations. 

NHHF is recruiting junior faculty researcher Mentees (up to 5 years post doc) and (patient-centered outcomes research) PCOR-experienced senior faculty researcher Mentors, for a year-long program of mentorship and educational activities including webinars, trainings and online discussion via a dedicated Facebook group, and hosting PCOR activities at NHMA’s 21st Annual Conference in Washington, DC, May 3-4, 2017 followed by the conference May 4-7, 2017.

 NHMA joined the Turn the Tide RX Campaign of the Surgeon General and invites you all to do so – 300% of opioid prescriptions have increased since 1999 and 1 in 4 receiving opioids from primary care physicians struggle with addiction.

Frederick G. Novy, Jr. M.D Endowed Professorship- University of California Davis, School of Medicine
 
The University of California Davis, School of Medicine, Department of Dermatology is recruiting for a full-time position at the Associate or Full Professor level in the Clinical X Series or Health Sciences Clinical Professor (HSCP) Series. The successful candidate is nominated to be the holder of the Frederick G. Novy, Jr. M.D Endowed Professorship. Appointees to the ClinX series are expected to conduct independent research. Both series require significant participation in teaching and University/public service.
The holder of the Frederick G. Novy, Jr. M.D. Endowed Professorship will be a nationally recognized scholar and clinician whose role would emphasize clinical education and, potentially, clinical research. A history of lecturing at national forums would be expected of the Novy Professorship holder. He /She will serve in a leadership capacity for educational issues in the department including a strong involvement with the dermatology residency program and medical student curriculum in the area of dermatology.
Administrative responsibility within the Dermatology Clinic, which sees over 32,000 patient visits a year, is possible, based on departmental need. The Novy Professor will have oversight of the Volunteer Clinical Faculty Program, Grand Rounds, Novy Lecture Series, and community interactions. This person would undertake clinical, educational, scholarly, and publication commitments and would play an active role in the Department, the Medical School, UC Davis Health System, and the community.
Required candidate qualifications include: an M.D. or D.O. degree, board certification or eligibility in Dermatology, eligibility for medical licensure in the state of California, an established track record of original research publications, and a record of teaching and patient care in the area of skin diseases. Demonstrated leadership experience and abilities, the ability to adhere to policies and procedures are required. The ability to work cooperatively and collegially in a diverse environment and credentials sufficient to be appointed to the full or associate level in the Professor of Clinical Dermatology series and/or Health Sciences Professor series. Individuals with an academic interest and background in clinical education and/or research is required.

   Legislative Update
 
US Department of Health and Human Services Appropriations for FY 2017
Overall, budget for US DHHS programs at CDC, HRSA, NIH increased – note the President’s Budget request was sent to Congress, Congress then developed its Appropriations recommendation and now the Senate has announced its request – which is currently all being debated, discussed for final FY 2017 Budget.
 
HRSA Training for Diversity – 
  • $21,711,000 for the Centers of  Excellence [COE] Program. The Committee recognizes that the COE Program increases the supply and competencies of underrepresented minorities [URM] in health professions. Funds support programs of excellence that enhance the academic performance of URM students, support URM faculty development, and facilitate research on minority health issues. Diversity among medical school students is associated with higher levels of cultural sensitivity of all students and greater willingness to serve diverse populations. There is evidence that suggests that minority health professionals are more likely to serve in areas with high rates of uninsured and areas of underrepresented racial and ethnic groups. 
    The Committee eliminates the Health Careers Opportunity Program due to funding constraints. Funding to increase the diversity of the health professions workforce in this bill is prioritized by investing in programs that have a more immediate impact on the production of health professionals by supporting students who have committed to and are in training as healthcare professionals.
  • The Committee provides $1,190,000 for the Faculty Loan Repayment Program. This amount is the same as the fiscal year 2016 enacted level and the budget request.
  • The Committee provides $49,070,000 for Scholarships for Disadvantaged Students, an increase of $3,100,000 above the fiscal year 2016 level. The Committee supports diversity among health professionals. 
  • The Committee provides $38,924,000 for Primary Care Training and Enhancement programs, which support the expansion of training in internal medicine, family medicine, pediatrics, and physician assistance. The Committee directs HRSA to prioritize programs that support underserved communities and applicants from disadvantaged backgrounds in any new grant competition in 2017.    
  • The Committee provides $35,873,000 for Training in Oral Health Care programs, which includes not less than $10,000,000 each for general and pediatric dentistry. Funds may be used to expand training in general dentistry, pediatric dentistry, public health dentistry, dental hygiene, and other oral health access programs. Funds may also be used to plan and operate training programs as well as to provide financial assistance to students and residents.    
  • The Committee provides $30,250,000 for Area Health Education Centers [AHECs], equal to the fiscal year 2016 level.
  • The Committee provides $38,737,000 for Geriatric Programs and encourages HRSA to work to ensure training programs are collaborative, interdisciplinary, and culturally competent.            
  • New to HRSA Workforce Funding: The Committee provides $50,000,000 for Behavioral Health Workforce Education and Training Program [BHWET]. The Committee directs that eligible entities for this program shall include, but is not limited to, accredited programs that train masters and clinical doctoral level social workers, psychologists, counselors, marriage and family therapists, psychiatric mental health nurse practitioners; psychology interns; and behavioral health paraprofessionals. The Committee provides $9,916,000 for Mental and Behavioral Health Education Training Programs. The programs provide grants to higher education institutions and accredited training programs to recruit and train professionals and faculty in the fields of social work, psychology, psychiatry, marriage and family therapy, substance abuse prevention and treatment, and other areas of mental and behavioral health    
  • The Committee provides $229,472,000 for Nursing Workforce Development programs. The program provides funding to address all aspects of nursing workforce demand, including education, practice, recruitment, and retention and the Nurse Corps Loan Repayment program.

NHHF PCORI Hispanic Health Research Mentoring Program just awarded 2 year grant – NHMA to collaborate with NHHF on a national mentoring program for Young Research Faculty (Instructor, Assistant Professor levels who have research experience or interest) with Senior Faculty - academic researchers to build a cadre of patient-centered researchers about Hispanic health research. Mentoring Program will include a 2 day Training on May 3-4 prior to the NHMA 2017 Annual Conference in Washington, DC, travel expenses covered. Applications to be on our website soon. HHS Budget from Senate – eliminates the HCOP Program... but moves $40M for mental health training for primary care physicians to HRSA from SAMHSA...waiting for Congress appropriations to HHS.
 
 
HHS Health Reform Update
 
HHS CMS requesting Comments on the new Alternative Payment Models for physicians on value-based payments due June 27th. As you know, the SGR was dissolved last year. 
The MACRA QPP will help us to move more quickly toward our goal of paying for value and better care. The Quality Payment Program has two paths:
     1. Merit-Based Incentive Payment System (MIPS)
     2. Alternative Payment Models (APMs)
MIPS and APMs will go into effect over a timeline from 2015 through 2021 and beyond.
The MIPS is a new program that combines parts of the Physician Quality Reporting System (PQRS), the Value Modifier (VM or Value-based Payment Modifier), and the Medicare Electronic Health Record (EHR) incentive program into one single program in which Eligible Professionals (EPs) will be measured on:
  • Quality
  • Resource use
  • Clinical practice improvement
  • Meaningful use of certified EHR technology
  APMs give us new ways to pay health care providers for the care they give Medicare beneficiaries. For example:
  • From 2019-2024, pay some participating health care providers a lump-sum incentive payment.
  • Increased transparency of physician-focused payment models.
  • Starting in 2026, offers some participating health care providers higher annual payments.

Prevention of Zika funding supported by Congress
 

Congress is still struggling to reach an agreement to provide emergency funding to battle the Zika virus, and lawmakers are worried the fight could last for weeks, despite increasingly urgent warnings from federal health officials about the need to move quickly to prevent a U.S. outbreak of the mosquito-borne virus. The Senate passed a bill for $1.1 billion for mosquito-extermination efforts, testing and vaccine research. But the House passed legislation providing only $622 million and redirecting money from other programs to pay for it, including some funds previously dedicated to fighting Ebola. The two sides now must come together and reach a compromise that can pass both chambers and be signed by President Obama. But there was little sign of progress Wednesday seeping from the offices of House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky. NHMA has sent letter of support to the Congress. 

 
H.R. 5278, the “Puerto Rico Oversight, Management, and Economic Stability Act” (PROMESA)
 

The bill was passed out of the House Committee on Natural Resources and the House Committee on Rules and has been commended by Hispanic groups for their expeditious work in advancing PROMESA to begin to address Puerto Rico’s debt crisis. However, there is lack of support for a Financial Oversight and Management Board and the potential undermining of the Puerto Rican government authority. NHMA supports the PROMESA Bill to help Puerto Rico with its $72 Billion debt crisis and the current Zika crisis.

  • Dr. De Salvo, HHS Acting Assistant Secretary of Health has invited NHMA to bring our network of health leaders to meet with her on HHS current policies that impact our communities. 
  • CDC special listening Session to be used for planning of next year’s Act Against AIDS grant program. 
  • NHMA interest groups met to plan their activities – Council of Young Physicians, Council of Residents, NHMA Six Region Forums in Sept-Oct; LMSA and HHS HEO also met on their priorities.

  • NHHF - PCORI Meeting resulted in priorities to improve Hispanic Research – second meeting will occurJune 29th in Washington, DC – interested? Contact NHMA today.
  • Gala Keynote Speaker Dr. Roberto Tapia-Conyer, CEO of the Carlos Slim Foundation followed-up meeting with Dr. Rios on his meeting with Board Leaders about his partnership interest with NHMA to improve Hispanic health access to program development: access to Mexican IMG physicians, health education through multimedia platforms, and the NHMA Leadership Fellowship to build influencers for responsive health system in the U.S. for Hispanic health.

CDC Act Against AIDS Campaign ---NHMA has social media, website, portal messages several times a week to increase awareness in our networks about the importance of HIV Testing and Treatment for high risk persons. In addition at the NHMA Conference, we had CDC HIV Exhibit and held a special listening session for CDC to hear from our physicians on their recommendations to reach Latinos high risk for HIV/AIDS. CMS Tranforming Clinical Practice Initiative – NHMA continues to recruit our physicians to take advantage of the free counseling and technical assistance about how to improve practice protocols for value based care. National Hispanic Health Professional Student Scholarships Applications now available on the National Hispanic Health Foundation (NHHF) Website,  www.nhmafoundation.org
This year NHHF Scholarship Reception and Galas will follow a Hispanic Health Professional JOB FAIR for physicians, residents and nurses for area hospitals, health systems, medical groups and clinics.  Recruiters from these institutions are invited to register at the JOB FAIR site on the same website.

Dr. Rios attended the AMA President Inaugural Dinner June 14 in Chicago to show support for working with the AMA and NMA for 10 years leading the Commission to End Healthcare Disparities which was recently dissolved as a nonprofit.. NHMA will continue to serve on the AMA House of Delegates Minority Affairs Section with the NMA and AAIP and encourages health disparities efforts for physicians. Special thanks to Dr. Kathy Flores, our last Commission liaison who attended meetings for NHMA for past 3 years.

Pfizer Doubles Income Eligibility Limit to their Patient Assistance Program to Benefit Even More Patients in Need

Pfizer has been helping patients gain access to the Pfizer medicines they need for more than 25 years, and the company has stepped up that effort by doubling the allowable income level for its patient assistance program, so that even more patients in need could be eligible to receive their Pfizer medicines for free.

Since November 2015, Pfizer increased the income limit from 2 times the Federal Poverty Level (FPL) to 4 times the FPL (adjusted for family size) for more than 40 medicines offered for free through its patient assistance program. That means that a single person earning at or below $47,520 per year or a family of four earning at or below $97,200 per year could qualify for free medicines from Pfizer.

Pfizer’s action is in response to the ongoing challenges patients face in paying their out-of-pocket costs for their prescription medicines.

“We have listened to patients and acted quickly to significantly expand the eligibility of our patient assistance programs. While patient assistance is not a permanent solution, it is a necessary step for helping to solve some of the high co-pay issues that some patients face,” said Sally Susman, Executive Vice President, Corporate Affairs at Pfizer.

Through its Pfizer RxPathways® initiative, Pfizer connects patients, including those with health insurance and those without, to a range of Pfizer programs to help them gain access to Pfizer medicines. These programs include

  ·      Patient assistance programs that provide Pfizer medicines for free to those who qualify 

  ·      Savings program that provides savings ranging from 35% to 50% off the retail price on Pfizer medicines for uninsured patients, regardless of income 

  ·      Insurance support services for select Pfizer medicines to help patients understand the coverage offered through their insurance plans 

  ·      Co-pay cards for those with private/commercial insurance and information on alternate sources of help, like independent co-pay foundations 

  ·      Referrals to other industry resources that may help if it is discovered that a patient is not taking a Pfizer medicine 

   
In the last five years alone (2011-2015), Pfizer helped more than 2 million uninsured and underinsured patients across the United States receive over 25 million Pfizer prescriptions for free or at a savings, making it the most comprehensive program of its kind.

Pfizer trusts that the expansion of the income limit for its patient assistance program will help bridge the gap for patients in need while the healthcare system continues to build into one that provides good coverage, for all patients. “The real solution is to have a system that provides patients with access to innovative new treatments their doctors prescribe and insurance plans with good coverage,” added Susman. 


There are currently over 60 medicines available for free through Pfizer RxPathways. This change affects those medicines that previously had income limits of  2 times the FPL – about 40 medicines in total. The other medicines – mostly oncology and specialty medicines – already had income limits at or above this level.
