Internship Testimonies
"As a soon to be Hispanic medical student, I found this internship to be very rewarding and insightful. The opportunities made available to me throughout the past three months, both in the professional and social aspects of this city, will no doubt help my career in the future. Looking back, it is amazing to consider all the powerful, high ranking people that I have met from both the government and private sectors. The highlights for me during my placement were the meetings on Capital Hill to discuss healthcare policy with House and Senate offices; organizing a presidential forum of top healthcare leaders and the presidential campaigns; organizing Capital Hill Meetings for our members; and organizing a medical school recruitment fair. These experiences not only have allowed me to make many contacts in the healthcare field, but to also learn how DC works and how to use it to the best of my ability"

"I had no idea what I was getting myself into when I accepted this internship position. I had gotten a couple of different offers through The Washington Center for Internships and Academic Seminars, but the NHMA stuck out to me the most. I am a Healthcare Management major in Utica, New York, and plan on attaining an MPH in the future in Grad school. The NHMA has definitely broadened my horizons in every way possible. I have learned how to maintain professional habits in the work place, but also remain friendly with my co-workers. We have been introduced to various forms of healthcare, policy work, government affairs, everything! We worked a lot on the 12th Annual Conference. That was more of an event planning lesson than anything else! We learned a lot about communicating with Doctors (especially how impossible it is to get in contact with them when you need to) and their secretaries, too. The Conference was a great experience, I don’t think I could ever gain more skills than what I gained while planning and participating in the Conference.

Overall, the habits that I have learned to maintain are professionalism, being prompt, communication, as well as courteous and meticulous. Having spent months working on the Fellowship Directory, I had to be very organized and timely when tracking down the missing fellows. Sure, that may sound rather…stalker-like, but it’s what someone has to do in a situation like that.

I’m very grateful to have shared my internship experience with such a great association. The NHMA has so much to offer, and is constantly growing. I am very happy with my experience here; it will definitely be a benefit in the future."
